A successful sports and activities camp in Corby will be able to inspire even more young people in the town after scooping a £15,000 award.
Corby Sport Dimensions, launched in 2009 by Rosemary Saunders, provides school holiday activities for children from the age of five.
It has gone from strength to strength and UnLtd, an organisation which supports social enterprises, was so impressed with the camp’s achievements, it has awarded it the cash to develop the programme.
Rosemary said: “We are delighted to receive this funding which will enable us to grow. We are also considering plans to provide facilities on the Kingswood estate in Corby. Our aim is to make a difference to the lives of young people and show them that with self belief they can achieve whatever they want to.”
Corby Sport Dimension has a team of 45 volunteers, made up of parents, teachers and young people who attended the camp and have now progressed to become young leaders.
“Some of the teenagers have achieved level 2 coaching qualifications in dodgeball and netball, as well as learning other skills such as first aid.”
Hockey coach Bob Anderson said: “I first became involved in Corby Sport Dimensions when I held hockey sessions and I was very impressed. Young people are rewarded for their good behaviour and hard work and Rosemary provides the inspiration which drives us all on.”
Corby Sport Dimension is registered with Ofsted and affiliated to Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs.
Camps are held at Corby Business Academy and activities include badminton, basketball, hockey, tennis, tag rugby, football, food technology, art, dance and drama.
Rosemary, who won the Spirit of Corby club award for her work with young people, said: “It’s all about giving them opportunities.”
The winter camp starts on Monday and sessions are £7 for half a day and £15 for a full day.
