A former Corby man has received the Gibraltar Award for his services to sport.

Mick McElwee, 51, was awarded the Governor’s Certificate and Badge of Honour in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

Mr McElwee grew up in Corby and attended Our Lady’s Primary School and Pope John senior school, in the town, where he excelled at football and played for school and local teams.

He now coaches young football players in Gibraltar.

After graduating with a degree in Spanish, Mr McElwee moved to Gibraltar, where he has lived and worked for many years. He married a local girl, Yvette.

He continues to have strong links with the UK, returning regularly to see family and friends in Corby, Luton and London.
