Anthony Monk, 25, from Brixworth, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court today (March 5) after being convicted at a trial in December of causing death by careless driving.

The court heard how Monk was driving at at least 82mph when he collided with 61-year-old Mary Davies on the A508 between Pitsford and Boughton at about 8.30pm on April 15, 2015.

Ms Davies had been running with a friend and was crossing the road from a farm track when the collision happened.

Her friend narrowly escaped being hit by Monk’s Vauxhall Astra, but Ms Davies, who was training for the London Marathon, died instantly on impact.

Monk was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years, banned from driving for three years and ordered to do an extended driving test. He was also ordered to carry out 250 hours community service.

Hugh Dixon, who was the senior investigating officer in the case at the time, said: “This has been a very lengthy and complex inquiry which has finally come to a conclusion today.”
