After the service, pupils from Alfred Street Junior School and Whitefriars Junior School planted 90 crosses, individually named and representing those from Rushden and the surrounding area who died 100 years ago during the First World War.

Chairman of the Rushden branch of the Royal British Legion Paul Mills said “The new garden of remembrance is a great addition to our war memorial grounds.

“This now gives a permanent area for people to plant crosses in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to remember friends and family that have passed on who had served their country.”

The garden was the brainchild of Legion member Harry Graham MBE.

Its construction was made possible by donations from individual councillors of Rushden Town Council, Legion members Mr and Mrs Lui and Margaret De Monte, and The Swivel Club of Rushden.

The garden was designed by John Twelvetree from Haddonstone and was constructed by Phil Davies of PAD Builders.

The garden has two plaques which were donated by branch nembers Phil Blanchard and Irene Curtis.

The first is inscribed with ‘Rushden’s Remembrance Garden - For all who made the ultimate sacrifice - We will Remember Them.’

The other is inscribed with ‘Harry’s Garden.’

Members of the branch feel it is a fitting tribute to Harry Graham, who is a former branch chairman and campaigned for many years to have the garden built.
