Sisters want to support Rushden girl during US cancer treatment

Macey Rose Williams, nine, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma on January 14 after a few months of unexplained illness.

Ewing’s Sarcoma is a type of bone cancer and symptoms include pain and swelling of the cancerous area.

Due to a delay in diagnosis Macey has ended up in a wheelchair because the nerves in her spine have been squashed by the tumour.

The Irthlingborough Junior School pupil is currently receiving treatment at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and because of the care Macey needs her mum, Clare Howe, and stepdad, Simon Tyler, have had to stop working to become her primary carers.

Karen Rogers from Northamptonshire children’s cancer charity Alfe’s Cause, which is supporting Macey, said: “As part of her treatment programme Macey will be going to America for photon therapy, a type of radiation, which is planned for June and will mean Macey is in America for between 10 and 12 weeks.

“Although the NHS covers the travel and accommodation costs for Macey and her mum, the family are hoping to raise £20,000 to cover the day to day living costs such as food and activities when she is there so she can make happy memories during a negative time because treatment will be a few hours a day.

“It is a very difficult time for the family having to be apart for so long and if enough funds are raised the family hope to send Macey’s sisters Lily, 12, and Jennifer, six, to join her in America and help her win the fight against the cancer with their sibling support.”
