Home-Start, which was set up more than 20 years ago to support vulnerable children, is threatened with closure next year due to funding cuts.

Charity workers say that without urgent financial support it would no longer be able to provide volunteers to work with young families in difficulty.

In the run-up to today’s Giving Tuesday, people across the Wellingborough area have been raising money with various events and donations.

Businesses such as 3P and Kiddi Caru have organised shoe box gift collections, several churches have offered their support and the Swansgate Centre has nominated Home-Start as its charity for the Giving Tree.

At Irchester Bowls Club, volunteers are running a regular monthly coffee morning and the charity has also received some large donations from individuals and companies, including a cheque this week from the charitable foundation, St James’s Place.

Fundraising officer Susan Thompson said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by our recent appeal for help.

“We launched a campaign back in October to bring in enough money to keep going next year, and we believe that the people of Wellingborough will help us do that.”

Home-Start Wellingborough and District will close next year if enough regular sponsorship can’t be found.

To take part in Giving Tuesday today, Home-Start in Wellingborough is asking people to sign up to donate £3 per month.

Scheme manager Janet Gwilliam Sanders said: “This is a local charity which only serves the people of Wellingborough and district.

“We receive no financial support from Home-Start nationally, and all the money we raise goes towards supporting families in the town and surrounding areas.

“Local people are very committed to helping us survive because they know how vital our work in the community has been.”

Over the last year, Home-Start Wellingborough and District has supported more than 200 children in the borough by training volunteers to support families in difficulty.

Referrals come from many sources including social services and domestic violence centres.

Volunteers are matched with suitable families and visit weekly.
