The recent heatwave brought on by a ridge of high pressure above much of England and Wales, saw temperatures soar to a record breaking 35 degrees Celsius in parts of Northampton yesterday.

Things have cooled down slightly today with the mercury set to reach a more comfortable 22 degrees Celsius at its hottest.

But The Met Office says an “increasingly humid airmass” is expected to spread northwards from the continent tomorrow, bringing with it hotter temperatures - and a risk of severe thunderstorms.

In a yellow weather warning for the East Midlands for Friday (July 3), the Met states: “Isolated heavy, and possibly severe, thunderstorms are expected to develop on Friday evening across parts of England and Wales.

“These are likely to become more frequent later.”

It adds: “Some torrential downpours are possible leading to localised surface water flooding, with large hail and frequent lightning also possible hazards.”

However the Met Office adds that “large uncertainty remains regarding areas most at risk from storms, and many areas will miss these altogether.”

The dry weather is expected to return for Saturday and Sunday.
