Kettering Council has revealed several roads will be closed and parking restrictions will be in place when the Olympic Torch comes to town, with the iconic flame stopping for an hour in Market Place.

The torch will be carried through Kettering on Monday, July 2, as part of the Olympic Relay, starting in Pytchley Road at 12.07pm and arriving on the Market Place at 12.39pm, and then there will be an hour break before it travels through the town centre to finish along Stamford Road at 1.54pm.

With thousands expected to line the streets for the showpiece event, on street parking will also be suspended on the day, and some car parks could have limited access.

Parking restrictions will be in place from 00:01am on Monday, 2 July which means parked cars will need to be moved otherwise they could be towed.

Councillor Russell Roberts, leader of Kettering Council, said: “We are proud to have the Olympic Torch passing through so much of our Borough in recognition of its beauty.

“It will pass popular landmarks such as Wicksteed Park, our award winning Market Place and the Queen Eleanor Cross where residents will gain a unique opportunity to see the Torch on display.

“This is ‘Our Moment to Shine’ and line the streets of our Borough showing support for and meeting our inspirational local heroes as they carry sport’s greatest symbol through our communities.”

Road closures will take place along the route from 11am across Kettering and will last until the torch has passed and crowds have dispersed.

Road closures will start on Pytchley Road at the Bryant Road junction and head towards the Market Place, following the route of the torch.

The second stage of road closures will begin at 12.30pm from the Town Centre to Stamford Road’s Ivy Road junction.

Sheep Street, Market Place and Market Street will be closed all day.

Detailed information for visitors and businesses is now available on Kettering Borough Council’s website including a map of the route and details of the road closures.

Council officers are also set to hold a drop-in session tomorrow and June 27 between 5pm and 7pm the council offices, in Bowling Green Road.

Buses are expected to be affected during the procession, so people are adviser to check timetables with service providers.
