Cottingham School, the winners of a schools’ tag rugby tournament, will join runners-up Danesholme Juniors at the county finals in February.

The school emerged triumphant from the contest, organised by the Corby, Oundle and Thrapston School Sports Partnership and held at Stewart & Lloyds RFC on Thursday, October 24.

Fifteen primary schools from the area and 180 primary school children took part.

The event was refereed by students from Lodge Park Academy, giving them the opportunity to build on and enhance their confidence, officiating and leadership skills.

Nathan Clark, from the academy, said: “I really enjoyed refereeing today, it was a great experience. The tag rugby course we did gave me confidence to be able to referee and I definitely feel my leadership skills have improved.”

The competition was organised by Andrew Milner, rugby development officer at Lodge Park Academy.

Cottingham beating Danesholme Juniors 3-2 in the final. Both teams will now go on to compete in the Northamptonshire school games competition.

Matthew Peleszok, school sports manager for Corby, Oundle and Thrapston, said: “The value of today can be seen on all the players’ faces. To see over 180 students achieving a personal best performance through sport is a credit to all teachers involved.”
