A mass fundraising effort to help save Kettering Town Football Club is now firmly under way.

The plight of the Poppies, who were wound up in the High Court on Monday over a £58,000 debt to Rushden & Diamonds (2008) Ltd relating to rent owed from the club’s time at Nene Park, has been receiving national exposure in the past few days.

The Kettering Town (Poppies) Supporters Trust have been taking donations while a Just Giving site was set up on Wednesday night at the request of Facebook and Twitter user Footy Accumulators (@FootyAccums).

Over £2,000 has already been donated from football fans from as far a field as the United States with the target for that site being £20,000 to go towards the paying of the debt and court costs as the Poppies appeal the decision to wind them up.

The site says that should the court appeal fail then the money will be donated to “local charities supported by the club”.

The Poppies are due to play Aylesbury United in the Calor League Division One Central at Latimer Park on Saturday in what could prove to be their last ever league game if their appeal for a rescission order fails.

But the club have also organised a special fundraising game to take place at Latimer Park next Thursday (September 12).

They will play their landlords Burton Park Wanderers at 7.45pm with entry being by ticket and a £10 donation to the Supporters Trust. A total of 1,300 tickets will be available and details are being confirmed at Saturday’s game.

In a statement on their website, the Poppies said: “We have been overwhelmed by offers of help this week and wish to thank everyone who has approached the club and the Supporters Trust via Twitter, phone and email.

“It is going to be impossible to thank everyone individually but thank you to you all, collectively, and as a club we want to make sure that any donations of offers of money are used solely for a fighting fund for our current situation – namely to pay off the creditor and the legal costs involved in appealing the winding up.”

Saturday’s game against Aylesbury United coincides with the national ‘Non-League Day’ with a special offer of £5 entry for any season ticket holder for teams in the Premier League, Championship or Football League.
