A hair salon celebrating 30 years in the business this year says keeping your feet on the ground when doing well is the secret to success.

Salon 101 in Rockingham Road, Kettering, will celebrate serving the community for 30 years this August.

Owner Vince D’Arienzo, who came to England as an 18-year-old 42 years ago, said: “The secret is keeping your feet on the ground and not to get carried away when you are doing well.

“I’ve seen a lot of successful people go down.”

Mr D’Arienzo, who started working for barbers in Market Street and Hawthorn Road before setting up himself in 1982, has grown the business from just himself to five employees.

He doubled the size of the salon seven years after opening and has renovated the shop to keep it fresh five or six times.

Hairstyles have changed over the decades and stylists have to have refresher courses to stay on trend.

Mr D’Arienzo said: “The 70s was long hair and feather cuts like Rod Stewart. Things slowed down for hairdressers because everyone was growing it long.”

Mr D’Arienzo’s wife Donna, 46, who he married after employing her as an 18-year-old, and nephew Pierino Geranio, 43, work at the family business.

Mrs D’Arienzo said: “We became really good friends and it just happened. One day we just looked at each other differently.”

Stylist Mandy Marsden, 39, who has worked there for 13 years, said: “It’s a nice family business. I’ve known the boss for about 14 years.

“It’s a nice place to work. All the clients who come here have been coming for a long time.”
