The Hopmaster General is opening for business in the town’s old Post Office building in College Street at midday tomorrow (Saturday).

Gavin Wooding said opening the new micropub and bottleshop is a ‘dream come true’ for him and he is keen to share his passion for craft beers and real ale with others.

Customers will be able to choose from a range of draught, bottled and canned craft beers and real ales, as well as ciders, wine, spirits and soft drinks.

There will also be bar snacks, including cranberry and clementine sausage rolls and white chocolate rocky road.

Gavin said: “Craft beer and real ale has been a love of mine for a long time so this is perfect for me.

“I see myself as a front-of-house sort of person and introducing people to something new.”

Gavin said Northamptonshire has lots of micro-breweries now, with many of them within a 10-mile radius of Rushden.

These include Hart Family Brewers of Wellingborough, Nobby’s Brewery of Thrapston, Nene Valley Brewery of Oundle and Three Hills Brewing of Woodford.

The new micropub has created five part-time jobs and Gavin described its decor as ‘industrial rustic’ with a mix of metal, wood and soft colours.

He said: “We have brought what was essentially a derelict property back into use.

“It was built in 1939 and used to be the Post Office.

“We open at midday on Saturday and the Rushden mayor Tracey Smith is coming.

“Anyone who comes down on Saturday and gives us their email address will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 to spend here.”

After tomorrow’s official opening, the micro-pub’s opening hours will be from midday until 11pm seven days a week with last orders at 10.30pm.

Gavin is really looking forward to welcoming people through the doors, and said he is keen to put something back into the community ‘wherever he can.’

He added: “This is a dream come true for me.”
