A family firm has blossomed since it first opened and is now celebrating 50 years in business.

Jan’s The Florist first opened its doors to customers in High Street, Rushden, back in 1964.

The shop was established by Jan Hollomon and is now run by her daughter Deborah Hollomon.

The shop window currently has a display of photographs showing the shop through the years.

Deborah said: “I used to help mum when I was much younger and was a Saturday girl.

“When I left school, I didn’t really know what I was going to do and mum said do you want to see if you like floristry so I said I would give it a go.

“I went off to college in Wisbech to train, came back and have been here ever since.”

Deborah said she loved everything about the job, adding: “I love the flowers, the making up of all the arrangements we do and the odd challenge we get for a funeral tribute.

“You also get to meet a lot of people.

“We have some lovely customers, and some that I have known for a good few years.

“I am amazed, it’s lovely we have managed to go for 50 years.

“Mum started it and we’ve managed to keep it going.”

The window display for the anniversary has led to some happy times of reminiscence for customers and former staff.

Deborah said: “We’ve had a list in the window of people that have helped us through the years.

“We have had people popping in to say congratulations and people coming in and saying they remember they used to be a Saturday girl here years ago.”
