A rugby player headbutted a footballer after an evening in a Corby nightclub.

Corby magistrates heard how Christopher Jones, 25, had spent the night of March 16 celebrating a rugby cup win in Rubix, George Street.

He went to McDonald’s for something to eat and heard football player Luke Cruickshank making a remark about rugby he found insulting.

Jones headbutted Mr Cruickshank, cracking his tooth, giving him a nosebleed and splitting his lip.

Solway Foods worker Jones, of Stephenson Way, Corby, admitted the assault in police interview and expressed remorse towards his victim.

Magistrates handed him a 12-month community order and ordered him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also told to pay £200 compensation to the victim, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
