A football club in Rothwell is one of almost 80 grassroots sports clubs nationwide nominated for a £20,000 makeover – the winners of which will be decided by a public vote.
Rothwell Corinthians has been put forward to receive the makeover from Buildbase in a competition being run by the Mirror.
So far 77 clubs from across the UK have been nominated, and people have until midnight on Monday, June 30 to vote to ensure their club gets on the shortlist.
The Corinthians have been nominated after the latest in a series of break-ins at their Sergeants Lawn home in Desborough Road in April.
On that occasion intruders stole metal pipes from the showers and the loft, causing serious water damage to the clubhouse.
A Just Giving page was set up by the club’s manager and players, which has helped to cover much of the repair job.
Club secretary Mark Budworth said: “Work has just started. There has security put into the roof where they broke in before. There are various alarms put in throughout the building.
“It’s been fairly full-on – we haven’t really had an off-season. But we are confident we will be up and running in July.”
Mr Budworth, who has thanked local groups including Rothwell and Desborough Lions for their support, said the club was not expecting to win the competition – it is competing against clubs from much larger towns across Britain – but admitted the £20,000 prize would go a long way to preventing future break-ins at the club.
In its nomination to the Mirror, the club said: “The club is a great asset to the town and these recent events have posed a real financial threat. We would be so grateful to receive a make over to return it to its former state.”
