Rocket runner has a blast in marathon

POCKET rocket runner Elaine O’Sullivan lived up to her nickname when she clocked an impressive time that would beat most men in the London Marathon.

Miss O’Sullivan, of Higham Ferrers, crossed the finishing line last Sunday after just three hours and 11 minutes.

The 52-year-old catering manager at Wellingborough School has also been selected to carry the Olympic torch through Kettering.

Her fellow runners at the Higham-based running group Team Balancise said she was an inspiration.

Group member Bruce Lovell said: “She is known to us as the Rocket who frequently beats men half her age in races.

“It’s an amazing time, made even more so by the fact that she is 52-year-old lady who is under 5ft tall.

“To put this time into context the average time for completing a marathon is four hours 30 minutes for men and five hours 10 minutes for women. She is such an inspiration to the local community. She only started running a few years ago and now she is one of the best athletes in the country. We are all so proud of her.”

Miss O’Sullivan also raised £1,100 for Crazy Hats through taking part in the marathon.

She said: “It just proved to be my best race ever. I think I smiled all the way around.

“I would like to thank our trainer Graham Buston. He is an inspiration. He works so hard for all of us.

“I just love running and I have met so many lovely people since I started,”

Budding runners can join the Team Balancise beginners group which meets every Monday at 6.30pm in Market Square, Higham Ferrers,
