Guests were given the red carpet treatment for the official opening of Corby’s new cinema.
A special screening of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation was held at the new Savoy cinema last night, ahead of opening to the public today (Friday).
Guests including Corby Council leader Tom Beattie, Corby mayor Peter McEwan and MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire Tom Pursglove were invited to look around the six-screen cinema and take their seats to watch the first film shown there.
Cllr McEwan had the honour of cutting the ribbon and declaring the cinema officially open.
He described the opening as a ‘milestone’ and said it would be a highlight of his mayoral year.
Cllr Beattie also addressed guests at the opening, and said: “I think it is quite apt that the first film on the big screen is Mission Impossible.
Corby has waited for 20 years to have its own cinema againCllr Tom Beattie
“Corby has waited for 20 years to have its own cinema again.
“I am sure that during that time many of us have thought it was an impossible mission to bring a cinema to Corby, but here we are.
“It shows that Corby is committed to succeed and to deliver.”
He thanked all those who have played a role in the project and added: “Everyone who has been involved should feel proud of what has been achieved.”
Other guests invited to the opening were those who had been involved in the planning and building of the £6 million structure, which has been developed by Mulberry Property Developments.
The cinema is the fourth for the Nottingham-based Savoy group.
It is fully digital and features the latest audio-visual technology, including immersive sound and 3D viewing to bring blockbusters to life.
Screen one will offer the very latest Dolby Atmos sound system, which has been used in productions such as American Sniper and Big Hero 6.
The cinema has the capacity for up to 900 people and boasts spacious stadium-style seating.
The cinema has created more than 40 jobs and further jobs have been created with Nando’s, Prezzo and RBW restaurants which have been built as part of the complex.
