Reckless driver ploughs car into house in Northampton...then saunters back to grab his mobile phone

The Ford Focus remains lodged in the sitting room of a home in Queen Eleanor Road this morning. A joyrider crashed the vehicle into the home around 1am.

This morning Ann and Garry Brugen are hoping the man who crashed a silver Ford Focus into their in Queen Eleanor Road, Far Cotton, at around 1am this morning, hands himself into police.

Recently retired civil servant Ann, 57, said it is lucky no one was hurt as her grandchildren had only recently been staying over at the home.

She said: “This car had been screeching about for a couple of hours so I was awake on and off.

Pictures from the scene last night show how the car careered through a garden before hitting the house.

“Then we heard this almighty bang.”

The car had careered into the sitting room of the home her and her husband have lived in for 26 years causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Currently it cannot be removed as it is feared pulling the out may topple the building altogether.

Neighbour Cheryl Harrison, who works at London Midland, and husband Martyn, ran downstairs when they heard the bang early this morning.

The full extent of the damage is not yet known as engineers are still assessing the house.

Mrs Harrison said the noise was like “a bomb going off.”

But remarkably she has described how the joyrider returned to the scene of the crash after a few minutes to collect his mobile phone form the vehicle.

She said: “When we got downstairs the car was smoking, but there was no one in the car. As we were on the phone to he police this person came walking over.

“It was the driver - he had left his phone on the seat.

“My husband grabbed him and wrestled him to the floor.

“But he managed to get away, though we managed to get his hoodie.

“He legged it down towards Delapre Crescent.”

Northamptonshire Police has been contacted for comment.
