Corby Councillors unanimously approved a motion to give Weldon protected status and to extend the protection to all seven villages in the borough.
The motion, put forward by Cllr Rob McKellar, was agreed at last Thursday’s full council meeting.
Gretton, Stanion, Rockingham, Cottingham, Middleton and East Carlton will also have protected status.
Cllr McKellar said: “The overwhelming support that this motion has received from councillors is extremely welcome.
“It is not an attack on housebuilding, but a very positive first component in an ongoing plan to make sure that development only takes place on sensible sites and that it does not swallow up our villages through urban expansion and in-fill building.”
The council’s planning department will now report back to councillors on how to include the protection through the council’s Local Plan.
