Plans for second Aldi store in Corby to be discussed next week

The discount supermarket chain wants to build a new food retail store with associated car parking, servicing and landscaping on land off Saxon Way West.

If approved, it would be a single storey building with a new site entrance from Saxon Way West as well as a new right turn lane for vehicles entering the site from the south.

There would be parking for 123 vehicles, including six parent and child spaces and seven designated spaces for disabled users.

Pedestrian access would be via a proposed new footpath leading from Headway.

Aldi held a public exhibition in January last year to hear people’s views on the plans, which have been revised since they were first submitted to include improvements for crime prevention and improvements to access to make it acceptable to the Highway Authority.

Corby Council has received 117 representations about the plans, with 99 in support of the application and 18 objecting.

Those in favour of the plans say the store would provide increased choice and competition, jobs for local people, it is a convenient location and there would be a good level of parking.

Reasons given by those objecting include no need for additional convenience stores, increased levels of traffic in the area and a decrease in local air quality.

A report to be considered by councillors next week states: “The benefits that will be realised if planning permission is granted include continued investment in the local economy and the immediate creation of up to 30 jobs.”

If approved by members of Corby Council’s development control committee on Tuesday, the new store will be in addition to the Aldi store in Rockingham Road, Corby.

The recommendation is to grant planning permission.
