Walgrave woman doing 'sew' much good by making masks

A woman from Walgrave has been busy making face masks to help protect people during the coronavirus crisis.

Since her teens, Vera Smith has been turning her hand to many different crafts, with all her skills being self-taught.

The mother-of-three also owned a haberdashery shop in Kettering at one time.

She now focuses on tailoring and alterations for friends, family and people in Walgrave and the surrounding villages.

She has also made costumes for places such as The National Trust as well as more local establishments such as dance schools.

But since Mother’s Day on March 22, she has been working tirelessly to make face masks for family and friends all around the world.

Vera's daughter-in-law Laurie Smith-Buchanan said: "She has even gone so far as to provide them for local residents, her hairdresser, a local pharmacy, village bin men, friends/acquaintances within The National Trust and friends who work within the medical field.

"At the last count she had made just over 100 masks and counting."

Vera has also made some masks for the police and she has made these in black.
