A group of volunteers have been getting stuck in to improve the living conditions for horses at the Embankment.

There has been concern for the animals at this Wellingborough site for many years, with people continuing to raise the issue with the RSPCA and the Northants Telegraph.

Eve Williams started a petition calling for action as she felt the horses are not being looked after properly, which has now had more than 6,400 signatures.

But after initially calling for action to help the horses, she has since amended the petition and is now campaigning for a change in the law which would help not only these horses but all animals in a similar situation.

The petition now states: "According to law, the way most horses are treated and kept is acceptable, therefore the RSPCA cannot remove them.

"This law needs changing.

"Currently, there are only five 'codes of practice' regarding horses welfare and treatment.

"I believe this is not enough for these beautiful animals."

And the petition went on to say: "We are calling on the law to set standards higher, with more detail on what is acceptable and what's not, and what will happen to people who break the laws."

As part of Eve's efforts to improve the living conditions for the Wellingborough horses, a group of volunteers have carried out two litter picks at the site.

Eve posted an update on the petition page, saying: "We had our second successful litter pick on the land where the horses are kept.

"Absolutely amazing teamwork and the outcome is a lot better, cleaner and safer.

"We filled seven to eight black bags full of glass, wood and other sharp things which are all now at the tip.

"Thank you everyone for being so supportive of this."
