A design teacher from Kettering is leading an effort to make thousands of free face visors for the NHS with the help of her pupils.

Katie Campbell is doing her bit during the coronavirus crisis after a Facebook plea was shared a staggering 6,000 times.

The 31-year-old, who is head of design, engineering and technology at Leicester Grammar School, was taught how to make the visors before going back to school to produce them.

And demand is so high they have now been asked to create thousands, including 700 for Kettering General Hospital.

Katie said: "It's quite humbling and it feels like you are making as much difference as you can.

"The doctors are so grateful and it spurs you on to keep going.

"You get to the end of an order and you just want to make more."

Other orders include 20 for Headlands Surgery in Kettering and orders for GP practices in Rothwell and Corby.

The initiative has seen donations from the public and Huxlow Science College in Irthlingborough, where Katie used to work.

Local companies are also laser cutting so they can make more in a day with pupils at Leicester Grammar School, who are in as children of key workers, helping on the assembly line.

By day three they had made 450 and by the end of the week Katie expects to have reached 1,000. She thinks they can ramp up production even further if they receive more material.

She said: "We have had lots of local companies who have been giving us reels of plastic and local companies who have been laser cutting.

"The orders are just coming in thick and fast."
