A pub in Kettering's town centre is set for another new look.

The red frontage of The Peacock in Lower Street will be swapped for black and gold after the revamp was given the green light by Kettering Council earlier this month.

But because of the coronavirus impact a pub spokesman said the refurbishment has been postponed for now and was unable to confirm when work will start.

The pub was built on the site in the 1960s after the original Victorian inn was demolished and then rebuilt by the brewers Bass.

The site has been occupied by a pub since the 18th century and the original pub was visited by Charles Dickens, who was in town to cover a by-election in 1835 for the Morning Chronicle.

A report prepared by planning officers said: "It is considered that the proposed advertisements are appropriate to their town centre setting and in keeping with the surrounding commercial properties."

The owners of the pub, Mitchells & Butlers, have been contacted for comment.
