Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for people to join its ranks as an on-call firefighter.

Two recruitment days are being held at Wellingborough Fire Station so anyone interested in the role can find out more.

The events will offer people the chance to have a go at some of the practical tests firefighters go through as part of their recruitment process so anyone wanting to take part should go along wearing comfortable clothing such as t-shirt/leggings or jogging bottoms.

The recruitment events are taking place in Wellingborough this month

Fire kit and boots will be provided.

There will be the chance to speak to local crew members and find out more about the role of being an on-call firefighter and how to apply.

Wellingborough station manager Scott Hirons said: "On-call firefighters have, in the past, included everyone from self-employed carpenters to hairdressers, stay-at-home parents or electricians.

"Being an on-call firefighter offers the flexibility to make this kind of balance possible.

"Being an on-call firefighter is such a rewarding role where community-minded people get to support the safety of the neighbourhoods in which they live or work.

"We want to attract the right people into these positions and I hope our drop-in events at Wellingborough prove popular with all those who think they might have what it takes."

On-call firefighters do everything from fighting fires to attending water rescues, road traffic collisions and animal rescues to carrying out fire prevention work in the community.

All training is provided and it is a paid role which people take on for the times of day or night they can commit to the service.

Each year, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service aims to recruit up to 40 on-call firefighters to support its work.

It currently has 204 people working as on-call firefighters (the full time equivalent would be 150).

Anyone wanting to be an on-call firefighter must be:

- 18 (or over), or within six months of their 18th birthday

- must live or work within five to eight minutes away from nearest ‘on-call’ fire station

- be physically fit

The recruitment events are being held at Wellingborough Fire Station in Irthlingborough Road, Wellingborough, from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, February 22, and Saturday, February 29.
