A number of new cycle racks will be installed in locations across Northamptonshire as part of an active travel scheme.

Northamptonshire County Council has announced its latest scheme after receiving £351,000 of funding from the Government’ Active Travel Emergency Fund.

The first block of funding is being used for temporary ‘quick win’ measures across the county to encourage people to cycle and walk, rather than use public transport.

As part of the latest development, work will commence on September 1, to segregate the cycle lane on the eastern side of Rushmere Road between Billing Road and the Northampton Old Scouts Rugby Football Club.

Plastic posts or wands will be installed to provide some separation between cyclists and motor vehicles. Gaps will also be left in the wands so that traffic can turn in and out of side roads.

In addition to the developments, cycle racks will be installed in 36 locations across the county, a full list of which is below:

Cllr Jason Smithers, county council cabinet member for Highways and Place, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to announce the latest travel schemes in the area to help cyclists and pedestrians get out and about in a safer, more efficient way.

“The cycle racks that we’re implementing across various locations in the county should also make it far easier for cyclists to find safe and sufficient parking where needed.

“In this way, we hope to create an environment where businesses can recover, while also ensuring we maximise the benefits to cyclists and pedestrians.”

Work is also continuing in identifying medium-term to long-term cycling and walking projects in the county, with input from the public, to secure further Government funding via the Emergency Active Travel Fund for those schemes.
