Boxing legend Bruno pays surprise visit to Kettering police hub

Former heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno paid a surprise visit to police officers in Kettering last night (Tuesday).

The popular 58-year-old, who became WBC world champion in 1995, stopped by at the Northern Accommodation Building in Cherry Hall Road for a coffee and to meet the Kettering Proactive Team.

Officers showed him around the station and spoke to him the Frank Bruno Boxing Academy, which is set to open in nearby Northampton soon.

A Kettering Proactive Team spokesman said: “It was great to show Frank around the station when he visited us on Tuesday evening.

“He is a great supporter of the British Forces and the police and it was nice to answer questions from him about our role and some of the tools we use in our daily fight against serious and organised crime in Northamptonshire.

“He had a quick coffee with the team as well and we spoke about a new boxing gym he is opening in the county.”

Bruno, who won 40 of his 45 fights - 38 of them by knockout - retired from boxing after he was stopped by Mike Tyson in his first title defence with a severe eye injury.

He has previously spoken out about his mental health and the Standens Barn Community Centre boxing project aims to help those with mental health problems.
