A petition opposing plans to build 500 new homes alongside the Oakley Vale estate in Corby has attracted more than 200 signatures in a week.

Great Oakley Farms announced in February that they wanted to build the homes on land on the Oakley Vale development which had originally been earmarked for a science park and further education establishment. The developers said the science park plan was unlikely to move forward because of “changes in the educational landscape”.

Instead, Great Oakley Farms said they wanted to build 500 homes, a school and a retail development at the site and hosted a public exhibition at Brooke Weston Academy in late February.

Cllr David Sims created the online petition.

In it, he said: “The proposal is not sustainable and would have a detrimental impact on the local community.

“There would be an increase in traffic not only generated directly from the development but in our view indirectly from road users using this as alternative route.”

The developers say the scheme will result in the creation of a number of jobs, particularly during construction, and will help meet the needs for more facilities and school places.
