Lockdown coming to an end... Diary of a Corona Kid (week 14)

With the re-opening of cinemas, hairdressers and pubs this weekend, it seems as if lockdown is nearly over.

So, because of this, Week 14 of Diary of a Corona Kid will be the last.

To begin with, I’d thought that a period of self-isolation would be awful.

We’d gone from seeing about 500 people in our daily lives to seeing less than five, so it was reasonable to assume that life was going to be very different.

But despite the drastic changes, lockdown wasn’t too bad in the end.

I shan’t lie, I didn’t join in with Joe Wicks every early morning, or bake a banana focaccia.

I did, however, clap for carers on a Thursday and don a face covering when visiting the supermarket.

I also tried to become a better cook. I made a beef Chinese curry, a sweet and sour chicken and some coffee-chocolate brownies.

The curry was unbearably spicy and had an odd liquorice taste.

The sweet and sour became more ‘sweet and orange’, and the brownies were actually quite nice, but were slightly undercooked.

All in all, I won’t be hosting any dinner parties any time soon.

I was surprised by the positive effects of isolation.

Whenever I saw someone from outside the household I’d be pleased to see them.

Emails, texts and phone calls became more appreciated, and everyday stuff meant more to us.

So in some respects, these aspects of lockdown should stay.

The virus is still here though, just not in as wide a circulation as before. So we should still be careful, wash our hands and keep a good level of personal space.

They say one metre-plus, which I take to mean at least one metre away, but with extra protection like visors or sanitisers.

Or, maybe we could wear a welding mask and carry a bottle of diluted Dettol around.

With that in mind, please remember the wise words of a teenager and stay safe.

Thanks for reading, Corona Kids. Take care.
