Northamptonshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds, who is responsible for appointing the successful candidate, has put together a comprehensive online application package including a six-minute YouTube video and a 26-page candidate information document.

In the video, Mr Simmonds said he is looking for the “next generation of leader” who will go “even further than him with innovating ideas”.

Mr Simmonds said: “I want someone who understands what the future of policing looks like, what it is in the 21st century and, maybe even with the decisions we have to take, what it looks like in the 22nd.

In the candidate information pack, Mr Simmonds says the ‘chemistry’ and ‘fit’ between him and the new Chief Constable is important to a successful working relationship.

The document states that Mr Simmonds is “very ambitious, demanding but open with colleagues and open to challenge”.

It states he is “conversational and likes to understand what drives and motivates people, prefers action and people who deliver and appreciates people talking to him directly”.

Mr Simmonds said attributes that work “less well” with him include people who talk too much and do not deliver results and people trying to flatter him or giving the answers or advice they think he wants to hear.

The job is expected to be filled by someone who is already a chief, deputy chief or assistant chief constable.

Mr Simmonds said he wanted someone with vision who thought “outside the box”.

He said: “This is not a job for your retirement but one you can use as a launchpad for another career or bigger role in the police service.”
