MPs in the north of the county were among a handful of Conservatives to rebel against the party leadership and call for an EU referendum to be held next year today (Friday, November 22).

Philip Hollobone, MP for Kettering, and Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough and Rushden, have both supported their colleague Adam Afriyie’s motion for a vote on the UK’s membership of the European Union to take place in 2014.

The two Northamptonshire MPs were tellers for the vote, meaning they announced the results of the vote to the House of Commons.

With Mr Hollobone and Mr Bone as tellers, 14 Tories and one Labour MP voted for the motion, which was defeated 249-15.
