Never a dull moment could be the motto for Ashley Welland Valley WI.
The group has members from Ashley and surrounding villages such as Cottingham, Middleton, East Carlton and Wilbarston who meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in Ashley Village Hall.
This year marks the centenary of the WI and members recently marked the event by celebrating with a party evening of samba/reggae drumming.
Recent meetings have included a talk on Richard III, a magician, Fiona Cairns - who created the wedding cake for the Royal wedding in 2011 - and Heather Jacks, winner of The Great British Sewing Bee in 2014.
The group is currently looking forward to Dr Ann Bonell from Leicester Astronomical Society, who is giving a talk called The Solar System and the ‘New Horizons’ Mission to Pluto.
The group goes on an annual visit to the open-air theatre at Tolethorpe and visits to local gardens and walks followed by lunches in village pubs are a regular feature.
Overnight trips are also held, the last being to the Cotswolds.
Craft activities include art, papercraft, sewing and wood-turning and there are quizzes and other fun events.
Every August the group has a meeting in a member’s garden.
Last year was a murder mystery event when the group president fell victim to some poisoned WI jam before she could sample the sumptuous buffet.
Involvement in the wider village community is also encouraged with the traditional role of WI women serving tea and cakes at village events, baking for Lakelands Hospice and organising the village spring clean.
All the group’s activities, pictures and contact details can be found at www.ashleyvillage.co.uk. New members are always welcome.
