While people in Northamptonshire are looking forward to spending Christmas with their loved ones, 71 county residents on the transplant waiting list are hoping for the gift of an organ.
A shortage of organ donors across the county means dozens of people will feel too ill to enjoy traditional festive celebrations.
During the last five years, 46 Northants patients died while on the transplant waiting list and their families will face Christmas without them.
Sally Johnson, director of organ donation and transplantation, said: “Every year thousands of patients on the waiting list in Northamptonshire and around the country have a Christmas clouded with anxiety and uncertainty.
“Some severely ill people might spend the whole of Christmas in hospital, just hoping they get a life-saving transplant.”
Fourty-nine people on the Northamptonshire transplant waiting list will be able to enjoy a merrier Chrismas this yearthanks to families who agreed to donate their loved one’s organs.
This December, NHS Blood and Transplant is running the Christmas List campaign to encourage everyone to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and tell their families they are proud to become a donor.
