Northamptonshire County Council publishes proposed ‘special responsibility’ allowances for councillors

The leader of Northamptonshire County Council is set to receive a £40,000 allowance in the next year according to figures released by the authority.

At the council’s annual general meeting next week, the Conservative-run authority is due to ratify the amount of money councillors with a ‘special responsibility’ will receive in the 2015/16 year.

The amount being proposed for leader, Councillor Jim Harker is £32,192, a slight drop in the £32,213 he earned from 2013/14 for his special responsibility allowance.

The amount proposed for deputy leader of the council, Councillor Heather Smith is £21,126, while cabinet members are likely to receive £19,114.

These amounts would be given on top of the elected members’ basic allowances, which were just over £8,800 last year for elected members of the controlling party.

The annual general meeting is to be held in the Council Chamber of County Hall, Northampton, on Thursday, May 7, between 10.30am and 1.30pm.
