Northamptonshire Community Foundation calls for public support for annual Surviving Winter campaign

Funds were distributed by the foundation to individuals and groups helping those with the greatest need. Now the foundation is appealing for the public to dig deep and donate to this year’s campaign.

A spokeswoman for the foundation said: “The winter can be one of the hardest seasons to get through for the most vulnerable in our community due to isolation and cold.

“Northamptonshire Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal is important to so many, there is a significant need in our county and it is vital that we help address the issues and fears affecting older people.

“With a colder than average winter predicted, many older people are much more vulnerable to the cold weather and for those who are unable to afford to heat their homes adequately they face bleak months ahead,” she said.

This year’s campaign has been backed by the Rev Richard Coles.

He said: “I am very pleased to support the Surviving Winter appeal and urge anyone in a position to do so to donate the equivalent of the winter fuel allowance to the campaign to help keep vulnerable older people warm this winter. I don’t yet qualify but will also donate the equivalent. Could you too?”

Victoria Miles, chief executive of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “The Surviving Winter appeal has become an important annual campaign which has helped keep isolated and vulnerable elderly people warm and well over the winter months.

“We thank everyone who has kindly donated their winter fuel payment in the past and urge anyone who can afford to forgo their winter fuel payment to make a donation this year. Every penny raised will be passed to those in greatest need.

“Last year we were able to help provide direct support to over 730 people, distributing funds directly to individuals as well as local organisations dedicated to helping those in greatest need within the county. The provision of hot meals and social activities, keep warm packs and maintenance tasks that help keep homes warmer are just a few examples of how the funds were used,” she added.
