Northampton man appears in court charged with stabbing police officer in the hand

A man has appeared in Northampton Magistrates Court charged with five offences, including wounding a police officer with intent.

Paul Shortt, aged 47, of Kenmuir Road Avenue, in Kingsley was arrested on Monday evening after an alleged incident at a house in Hardlands Road, Duston.

The court heard that during the incident a police officer received a large stab wound to his hand. He was later taken to Northampton General Hospital for treatment.

Magistrates were told this morning that Mr Shortt faced five charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, the most serious of the alleged offences. Police later confirmed that the other charges were possession of a bladed article, criminal damage, common assault and sending malicious communications.

Shortt entered no plea and was remanded in custody to appear at Northampton Crown Court next month.
