News from Corby and Rushden Rotary Clubs

Corby’s bravest children and young people have been honoured by Corby Phoenix Rotary Club at a special ceremony.

The Young People of Courage Awards hosted at The Holiday Inn, Corby, were attended by Cllr Anthony Dady Mayor of Corby, Rotary District Governor Ken Billington, parents, carers and staff from Corby schools including the five young nominees.

Corby Rotarians set up the awards as a way to officially recognise youngsters’ achievements overcoming challenges in their lives such as illness, special needs or acting as a carer for a parent and other family members.

President Mel Jarvis said, “When we at Corby Phoenix first considered the idea of these awards it was said that youngsters such as those with us today are more often than not ‘under the radar’.

That is the real reason why we have organised this ceremony in order to honour five young people from our local community who, against all the odds, have shown tremendous courage in dealing with and overcoming difficulties in their personal circumstances.”

The winners were John Glen, Kelsey Healey, Katie Donnelly , Gemma Morris, and Nickie Binder,

Each winner received a personalised silver platter and framed certificate as well as a shopping voucher presented by the Rotary District Governor Mr Billington who, together with the Mayor, .

Mr Jarvis paid tribute to the winners and thanked local businesses for their support.

He said: “Our special thanks go to Joules clothing, Broughton Wines, Corby Holiday Inn and BFK Design Associates who have sponsored our event in enabling us all to celebrate the lives of the five very special young people.

He added: “We have been privileged to meet these young people who are fantastic examples of their generation here in Corby.

“We hope they will continue with their education, their perseverance and dedication but above all, with their courage.”

It is hoped that the Corby Young People of Courage awards will become an annual event with nominations already being sought from senior schools and colleges for 2016.

Corby Phoenix Rotary Club meets at 7.30pm on Thursday evenings at the Holiday Inn in Geddington Road, Corby.
