New orchestra shows Corby's not just a steel town

A classical violinist who wrote a new piece of music celebrating Corby's cultural diversity has formed an multi-nationailty orchestra to perform it.

Corby born and bred author, playwright and musician Paula Boulton has written a new piece of music celebrating the town’s rich diversity that will be performed by the Sounds of Home orchestra at the Core Theatre in January.

Supported by an Arts Coucil grant for the arts, Paula is bringing together people from all over the world, proving that music is indeed a universal language,

She said: “I have always wanted to form an orchestra here in Corby ever since I was told that the ”sons of Steelworkers will remain the sons of steelworkers” when I asked why there was so little investment in classical music in the town 40 years ago.

“We have lots of extremely talented musicians in the town and I have brought together musicians from across the region many with links to Corby to make this a reality.

“When we had the Festival Hall, Rutland Sinfonia was based there as it was acoustically perfect for orchestras.

“Several players were recruited from there and world famous musicians from the town are also coming home to play with us.

“In addition there are several nationalities represented in the orchestra too. Many immigrants are highly trained musicians. One studied in St Petersburg for nine years. We have a Cuban percussionist, an Iranian double bass player, a Lithuanian timpanist and a Kenyan tabla player.

“Personally for me, having ex-pupils take the trouble to travel back from uni to take part is very moving.

“And the music is a unique demographic barometer of how Corby sounds right now!”

Paula is also working with percussionist and emerging conductor Venezuelan Elio Andrade.

Her orchestral suite, The Sounds of Home, will have its world premiere on Saturday, January 21 at The Core theatre, conducted by Elio.

It is inspired by Corby people’s responses to the question ‘what music reminds you of your homeland?’
