New Navy training corps for youngsters could be launched

Youngsters could soon get the chance to sail the River Nene and take part in a new community group.

A community leader is hoping to open a Navy Training Corp (NTC) in Raunds this year, possibly by the summer, but said he needs help.

Captain Jon Mander (Marines) NTC, of Rushden, said he would like to set up the group to help get children active and have fun.

He said: “It is all about children getting off their bums and learning new things, and of course enjoying themselves.”

The proposed group will be open for eight to 18-year-olds, who will take part in activities such as sailing, map reading, orienteering and camping. They can also complete a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Capt Mander said the idea is only a few weeks old but he now needs help from volunteers to get the group up and running.

He said: “I need a few people to come forward, potential officers and instructors to help get us on our feet.

“They do not need to be from a Forces background, as training will be given.”

Interested volunteers can call Capt Mander on 01933 412099.
