Ten nervous celebrities have started their training for this year’s Strictly Corby event.

They met their dance partners from MaSh dance school for the first time at the weekend and now have just 10 weeks to learn the waltz, cha cha and a show dance before the big night in October.

The popular event is organised by and in aid of Lakelands Hospice.

Last year it raised nearly £17,000 and more than 400 people cheered on the contestants at the Best Western hotel in Rockingham Road.

Taking part this year are Lakelands nurse manager Cathy Langtree, mayor of Corby Judy Caine, Victoria Julian from RS Components and Janine Mulligan from Seatons solicitors, as well as yours truly.

The male celebrities are Franco lo Presti from RS Components, Tresham College principal Stuart Wessleby, Martin Brown, who is representing Corby Radio, and Alan Tew from Best Western Rockingham Forest hotels.

Lakelands community fundraiser Paul Marlow said: “This event is one of the most popular on our calendar, the whole town really gets behind it.

“We had over 30 people apply to be a contestant which was unprecedented.”

Shelley Davies, who runs MaSh Dance with her mum Marye Simmonds, said: “Everyone had a great time last year with some of the contestants going on to take lessons with the school.”

Strictly Corby will take place at the Best Western on Friday, October 18. Tickets are £10 and go on sale on Monday, September 9, from the hospice in Butland Road or by calling 01536 747755.
