Neil's legacy to live on at Wellingborough community centre he loved

Graham Campbell has been at the heart of the fight to save Glamis Hall in Wellingborough from the moment its future was put at risk.

The support, care and friendship his dad Neil Campbell received there was the reason he couldn’t see it close.

And two years on since Wellingborough Council handed over the keys to the Glamis Hall For All committee, the centre is going from strength to strength.

Sadly Neil, 80, died on January 21, but his legacy will live on after £500 donated at his funeral will go to Glamis Hall.

Son Graham said: “He’d spent the past two months in Northampton General and battled well with his illness.

“We were called in twice by the hospital, but his toughness pulled him through.

“He’d spent the past 20 years at Glamis Hall following a massive stroke and because of the excellent care he’d received there, that was why I fought so hard to keep it open.

“We decided to only have flowers from family and all donations to go to Glamis Hall on his behalf.

“We were so pleased that all friends and family kindly donated a total of £500 at his funeral.

“He will be sadly missed at Glamis Hall where he has many friends.”

Graham said his dad was a proud Yorkshireman who served with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

The family arranged to have a military send-off at his funeral with a standard bearer coming down from his association in Pontefract, who was also accompanied by The Royal British Legion.

Mr Campbell had lived in Wellingborough since 1972 after moving up as part of the London overspill.

He suffered a stroke at the age of 59, but loved going to Glamis Hall three days a week.

He celebrated his 80th birthday last year with a party at the hall on the Queensway estate.

Glamis Hall For All is a registered charity and it’s aim is to provide a community hub.

It has a lunch club five days a week where people can enjoy a cooked three-course meal.

They also run a VIP club Monday to Friday where people can attend all day, with a three-course meal and activities on offer throughout the day.

Transport can be provided to and from the centre.

Assisted bathing is another service on offer for those who cannot bath or shower at home on their own.

The centre also provides various youth and sports facilities.
