Musicians of all abilities from across the county are invited to join the ranks of a community orchestra.
Roade Community Orchestra was the brainchild of local professional musician and music teacher Ian Riley, starting out in 2000 as a collection of eight or so musicians who met on a Tuesday night to play specially arranged pieces.
The next two years saw the group grow to about 20 members and after more than a decade of making music together, the orchestra now boasts nearly 40 members of all ages who meet up once a week to rehearse.
Violinist Maggie Scott said: “This unique orchestra is always welcoming new members of mixed ages to join them in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
“We do not audition. We always have time for a break with refreshments and the rehearsals are not only fun but a social event.
“We are particularly looking for string players ie violins, violas, cellos and bass and also flute, oboe, bassoon and French horn players.
“We are also looking for timps, percussion and drumkit players.
“If you are interested, or you know of someone, please do not hesitate to come along with your instrument and music stand to either play or listen when you will be given a warm welcome.
“As we are a community orchestra we welcome players of all abilities but would particularly welcome musicians at Grade 5 and over.”
The orchestra meets every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.15pm during term-time at Roade Primary School near Northampton, and there is easy parking.
Its musical repertoire accomodates all tastes, including classical music, film and show tunes, and caters for players of all skill levels with a carefully balanced range of music chosen to suit the whole group.
Each year the orchestra holds a summer concert in the grounds of Roade Primary School, which is usually held out doors if the weather is good. The past few years has also seen the group invited to play at Maidford Fete.
This year there will be a special Christmas concert with Roade Community Choir at the Elizabeth Woodville School, Stratford Road, Roade, on December 11 at 7pm.
