More than 50 vehicles stopped during police operation in village near Wellingborough

Officers from the Wellingborough Rural Safer Community Team were joined by colleagues from the HMRC road fuel testing team for the traffic operation carried out over several hours this morning.

They stopped drivers for various driving offences, as well as several lorry drivers who were flouting the 7.5 tonne weight limit through the village.

A total of 52 vehicles were stopped during the operation, with 18 tested for red diesel, 23 for defects, two for fog lights, one for no MOT, two for speeding and one for not wearing a seatbelt.

They also stopped five HGVs which were over the weight limit for the road, a long-running issue for the village which has led to similar operations in the past to try and crack down on the problem.

The team posted a number of tweets during the operation, which they said had been successful, and also tweeted: “A big thank you to two of our brilliant special constables who braved the cold weather at 6.30am to assist us in this operation.

“Also thank you to the George Inn #Wilby for allowing us to use your car parking facilities in order to safely carry out our operation.”
