The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth will be performing in the town at a concert organised by the Wellingborough branch of the Royal British Legion.

Nearly 300 tickets have already been sold for the concert on Saturday, March 5, at the United Reformed Church in High Street and the organisers can’t wait to welcome the band to the town for the first time.

Ian Nunney from the Wellingborough branch said: “We are really looking forward to it.

“The event is not only raising money for the Poppy Appeal, it is also celebrating the 90th birthday of the Queen and the fact she is the longest reigning British monarch ever.

“The second half of the concert will be like the Last Night of the Proms so everyone can sing along.

“We have got lots of flags that we are going to hand out.”

Among those attending the concert will be the Japanese Defence Attache, who was keen to return to Wellingborough after visiting the town for a VJ Day service and Poppy picnic last year.

Mr Nunney said: “Ticket sales are going quite well so far.

“We had 800 printed and that’s the maximum capacity, but we are well on the way to 300 tickets sold so far.

“We are very pleased with the way it is going so far, but we’d like to sell a lot more.

“It is very much a coup to get the Royal Marines Band.”

Tickets cost £15 for the concert which starts at 7.30pm and are available by calling Mr Nunney on 01933 279410.

They can also be bought from Wellingborough Museum, The Hind Hotel in Sheep Street and AO Copy Bureau in Oxford Street.
