Memorial for soldier 100 years after death

The 15th soldier from the Corby area who was killed during the First World War will be remembered on Sunday, March 29, when a dedicated flag is raised at the Cube on the 100th anniversary of his death.

Leonard Joseph Stokes was born in Hallaton in 1897 and is remembered on the Cottingham/Middleton memorial.

He served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment after enlisting in Kettering.

Pvt Stokes was killed by a sniper while stationed in trenches just east of St Eloi. He was 17 years old.

Information on the soldiers is available at the Cube Helpdesk and can be found on Corby Borough Council’s website, www.corby.gov.uk as part of the commemorations.
