Margaret bounces into polio campaign

Wherever District Governor Margaret Morley goes, so does her space hopper.

Margaret, who belongs to the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix, is always looking for new and innovative ways to engage young people and Rotarians in the work of the club.

This year the club’s efforts aim to raise funds for World Polio Eradication and Margaret decided to enlist the help of a purple space hopper to get people involved.

She will bring the hopper to events to get people talking about the campaign.

Purple is the highlight colour for Rotary’s Polio Eradication campaign, chosen because when the children in India had been immunised their “pinkies” were coloured purple.

Margaret took part in an immunisation programme in India and saw for herself the children who had been saved from this crippling disease.

Following this experience she said: “When you see these lovely children just bouncing around and smiling, knowing they could have been at risk of developing polio, you just know you want to finish the job by helping Rotary International raise funds to help to totally eradicate the disease from the world.

“Crippled children in India and Africa stand no chance and we owe it to them to ensure they have the same chance as our children.”

It has just been announced that for every amount Rotary raises in direct support for polio immunisation the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will double it, up to $35m!

India has been polio-free for two years and we now have to work on Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

We cannot give up. Margaret needs a helping hand deciding on a name for the purple space hopper – there is a prize of a bottle of very nice wine for the best original suggestion.
