M1 in Northamptonshire will close tonight for ‘essential works’

Part of the M1 in Northamptonshire will close this evening for essential works to be carried out.

Highways England is warning drivers that the M1 will be closed southbound between junction 18 for Crick and junction 16 for Northampton from 9pm until 6am.

The closure will also include the M45 entry slip road.

Highways said it is closing the motorway to allow for ‘essential work’ to be carried out as part of the Smart Motorway project which is set to be completed by Spring 2017.

Preliminary works are being carried out on the verge including draining, surveys, site clearance and installing specialist fencing.

There will also be a closure on Thursday night (November 26) from junction 19 to 18 southbound.

Highways advise to add an extra 15 minutes onto your journey and to follow the diversion signs.

>M1 southbound junction 18 to junction 16 diversion

M1 southbound traffic will be diverted onto the A5 Southbound at junction 18. Traffic will follow the A5 to the cross roads with the A45 at Flore. Traffic will turn left at the traffic lights, following the A45 to re-join the M1 southbound at junction 16.

>M1 southbound junction 19 to junction 18 diversion

The full closure is from Junction 19 to 18. The diversion to continue on the M1 is from Junction 20 to 18.

M1 southbound traffic will be diverted onto the A4303 at junction 20. Traffic will follow the A4303 to the roundabout with Rugby Road A426. Traffic will turn left at the roundabout and follow the A426 to the A5. Traffic will again turn left following the A5 to re-join the M1 southbound at junction 18.
