A lesson in road, internet and fire safety for pupils from schools across Kettering

The events have been arranged by organisations including Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Kettering Council with the aim of teaching youngsters how to keep safe in a fun and engaging way.

PC Mike Norman from the Kettering Safer Community Team (SCT) has been leading the initiative.

The first event took place on November 10 with another session held at the Kettering park on Thursday, which included a visit by the county’s police and crime commissioner Stephen Mold.

Sergeant Nathan Murray from the Kettering SCT said: “The aim of the event is to include schools from all around Kettering and bring together different agencies to support and engage with youngsters.

“It is a great opportunity to educate pupils in an enjoyable and fun way.

“It also gives us the chance to develop our working relationships further with schools in the Kettering borough.”

The workshops include interactive activities and talks for children on subjects such as road safety, cyber safety, how to spot fire hazards, and crime prevention.

Children have also had the chance to see and explore fire and police vehicles at close hand.

Wicksteed Park’s managing director Alasdair McNee said: “We are delighted that the safety awareness days are being delivered as a new partnership with the emergency services and our community team.

“They not only raise awareness of personal safety issues but also enable hundreds of local school children to visit the park and see a different area of our work.

“The events have proved very successful and we look forward to working on future initiatives.”
