The Post Office is proposing to relocate one of its branches in Kettering, with significantly extended opening hours.

Plans are in place to close the Edmund Street branch and open one in the nearby Premier News Food & Wine in Mill Road.

The move would see a modern open-plan branch with Post Office services provided from two open-plan tills at the shop counter.

Services would be provided throughout the shop’s opening hours - Monday to Friday from 6am to 10.30pm, Saturday from 7am to 10.30pm, and Sunday from 8am to 10.30pm.

This is an extra 64 hours and 30 minutes a week of Post Office service including all-day Sunday and Saturday afternoon.

The branch would open significantly earlier and close much later every day.

There would also be improved accessibility as the current premises in Edmund Street has a step.

Although there are currently steps at the entrance to the proposed premises, these would be removed and another doorway installed at the left side of the shop with a permanent ramp.

The relocation, with the current postmaster’s agreement, would be part of a major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments.

Regional network manager Will Russell said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Kettering and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

The Post Office is now inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the move in a public consultation.

Post Office Ltd welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like considered before a final decision is taken on this proposal, with the consultation closing on February 1, 2016.
