Dr Adrian Perkins will fight against an as-yet-unknown competitor on his 51st birthday on November 12 to raise funds for Cancer Research.

Dr Perkins, who is a GP at Dryland Medical Centre, says he has been inspired by a number of cancer patients who have had to take on a fight they don’t want to.

He said: “I was starting to get a bit unfit and I don’t really like going to the gym so I thought about trying boxercise.

“I then found a website about charity boxing and thought, “yeah, I’d be up for that”.

“Unfortunately as part of my work I do come across a large amount of contact with cancer sufferers, and whenever a patient receives such a diagnosis they are plunged into a fight they very much wouldn’t want to be taking on.

“I’ve been doing two sessions a week and the first few times I woke up the next morning as stiff as an ironing board, but it’s getting easier.

“I’ve taken a few whacks in the mouth so far to no effect, which is quite reassuring, so if I come out of it unscathed it will be a success.”

Dr Perkins, who has been a doctor for 21 years, weighs in as a cruiserweight but will not know his opponent until the Monday before his clash.

He added: “They pair you up based on your boxing ability and fitness, which is the big key.

“Unfortunately, they don’t take into account your age!

“You wouldn’t think three two-minute rounds is that much but it’s absolutely knackering.

“All of the patients have been really positive about it.
